New Play Development - Submissions

At Azuka, we celebrate playwrights at every stage of development. We are working hard to reach writers without exhausting the resources of our small company, and wasting the time of writers whose time is already limited. Above all, we are committed to building relationships with artists who share our commitment to sharing on stage the stories of those who are so often overlooked.

To this end, Azuka’s artistic staff sponsors and supports New Pages and Rising Writers - initiatives for emerging Philadelphia-based playwrights. We accept electronic submissions through our New Play Development form as well as agent submissions. Since our developmental and production opportunities are generally programmed through these channels, our staff is not equipped to accept unsolicited scripts via email.

If you are interested in joining one of our writer’s cohorts or having your play developed at Azuka Theatre, please complete the form linked below. Before reaching out to us, we recommend you peruse our history and production archives to get a better understanding of the kind of material we develop and produce.

All material will be reviewed. Please be advised it may take up to 1 year for us to respond to work or playwrights we are interested in pursuing further. Due to the volume of submissions, Azuka staff may only reach out to you if we are interested in exploring your work further or building a relationship with you as a playwright. 

To apply you may need:

• An Artistic Statement about your work

• Synopsis of your most recent full-length play (even if it’s in-progress)

• Ten-page dialogue sample (preferably from the same play as above)

FULL SCRIPTS SHOULD NOT BE SUBMITTED UNLESS REQUESTED.
